Sunday is Halloween, and the frightfest has trick-or-treaters checking the Web for the history of the haunted holiday.
Lookups on 'what is the history of Halloween' rose 220% on Yahoo!. Spooky searches for 'the haunted history of Halloween' and 'the true history of Halloween' were also scary-high.
Turns out, the modern-day tradition of outfitting yourself in a costume and going door to door for candy has some really ancient roots.
Originally, the festival came from the Celtic holiday Samhain, which means summer's end, and celebrated the end of fall and the beginning of winter. This day also marked the Celts' version of the new year — and the time, they believed, when the dead came back to roam the earth. (Insert spooky music here.)
Ancestors were honored, but evil spirits were warded off by lighting bonfires and wearing costumes to hide from them. Turnips carved with faces got placed in windows to scare off the unwelcome undead. People would go 'a-souling,' and in exchange for food and drink, pray for a household's dead relatives. In Scotland, spirits were impersonated by men wearing all white with veiled faces. Sound familiar"

Photobucket

When ya'll are not lookin, Fletcher will get out all your Christmas stockings and hang around in them. It's strangely his favorite pass time. He thinks it's funny. More on the sock Monkey news here in The Sock Drawer, Charlie mac has been finished! We've all been celebrating and dancing the jig around here! Well...all except for Fletcher,he's swinging in our Christmas stockings. He's swingin in a celebrating way,I can tell the difference in the way he swings. Although he'd never admit to it. So look forward to seeing the pic's later on today. Also....Mike finished another Sock Monkey he was working on. The finishing touches such as arms and a tail have been attached. The coldness of the morning

Photobucket

The frost has fallen on the windsheild this morning! The plug in heater has been fired up to warm the air. Good morning Possum's and Peepsters! As I told you in blogs of days gone by......The newest member to my Sock Drawer is coming along nicely. Mike had to redo him. He was in need of some major over do! And major over do he is getting. He is heeling nicely on the surgery he's already had. Thrift store toe socks have been bought and hands have been made from them. He will be ready for the unveiling soon enough. I have learned his name finally. His name is Charlie Mac! So now there is Fletcher,Charlie Mac and me! Bubba that is for those of you not been paying attention to my blogs all along.
Photobucket

This is Fletcher and myself. Keep us in mind so you don't get us mixed up! Bubba's Sock Drawer is filling up. But what a good time we are having. Rumor has it that the new vampire actors for Breaking Dawn are being chosen! How exciting is that? And Bella wants to become a Vampire! Oh! My sock monkey stars! Why on earth would you want that? The answers to that and other perplexing questions are yet to come! Have a blessed day Possum's.Bubba

An apple a day

Photobucket

Apple Possum's! And a great fantabulous day with many blessings in it! Socks alive and many returns to the livning! Nothern beans a cooking on the stove for dinner. They are smelling good as they simmer with the ham chunks in the pot along with them. Goes good with the overcast day and sprinkling rain. Seems rather chilly out. I'll bet there is gonna be colder weather this evening. Twill be reading more in Aclipse tonight. Mike and I are about half way through the book. The story is good and interesting.

Photobucket

Scooby sleeps peacefully as we read our story. Joey is across my lap. Mike snaps the picture for the cuteness of it all.

Mondays Chatter

Photobucket

Good after noon Possum's,Peeps and General Sock Monkey lovers! Sock salutations from Bubba's Sock Drawer. Turned into the greatest day! Spaghetti for dinner and lunch. Positively the bomb as I tell the story! Twas an outting to the thrift store today. We weren't allowed to photo inside the store as they made him put the bag he carries me in and also the camera in, behind the counter. Funny....the ladies that come into the store don't have to put their pocketbooks behind the counter! Why were we singled out? Only at the thrift store do these things happen. Never been ask something like this inside of Kroger! It's positive madness! The real reason we were there was to pick out some clothes for Mike's new job. Needed a red shirt and some kacki pants for uniform purposes. For three dollars he was completely clothed with a pair of shoes, pants and shirt.Bubba

It's Monday my Peepsters

Photobucket

It's the beginning of the new week Possum's and a perfectly fantastically wonderful beginning to this week I think if ya'll ask the Sock Monkey on the fly! Off to the coffee pot of my choice it is a Caffiene in the Monday morning day! Mike and I have started the third book in the Twilight series. I do think in my wildest Sock Monkey litratureness ,that I shalnt be in the middle of a Vampire and werewolf battle. It's perfectly impossible for that! But the stories are great just the same. Fletcher quite agrees with me on this one. Fletcher is only in the second book. I am way ahead of him in the story!

Photobucket

I keep oozzing a marvelous mowning as I read to entice him! Nothing but a little Sock Monkey tease you understand. It makes him read all that much faster to catch up with Mike and myself. I tell him, "oh do slow down and enjoy the story! You might miss something just because your in a hurry to compete with us. It's drives him utterelly mad when I do that! Mike and I wonder off to a bubble bath and giggle about it. Mike tells me not to be so mean. It's all in good fun! I adore Fletcher since he's come to live with us. He is my bestest friend there ever was! And so he is one of the Sock Monkey pack here in my Sock Drawer. We have another whom has come to live with us,but I haven't learned his name as of yet. Mike has him in the Sock Monkey hospital. He needs a major over do! He's original from a long, long time ago,Just like Fletcher and myself. We will get to meet him in the up coming weeks. I will keep ya'll posted on his progress when the needle and thread start to fly around here. Have a blessed day Possum's!Bubba

Photobucket

It was so cold this morning I had to put a hat on my coffee to keep it warm! LOL!

Saturday evening post

Photobucket

Greeetings Possum's,Peeps and general Sock Monkey lovers! Lot's has happened today so let's get started! I was sitting around reading a copy of Country Woman magazine this afternoon and Mike tells me I've got to visit a surgeon. *WHAT!* I replied very quickly and in shock! Remember,Bubba, we've already had this conversation once and you know what it's about! Mike said. ( Don't for get the "" around what Mike said. Yes I did that in the air as I do have fingers. Here's the reason why......

Photobucket

I have a whole in my tail! Could it be? A Vampire bit me while I was reading New Moon? Wouldn't I be a Sockpire by now or something? So that was ruled out by the physian on staff. The doc told me it's due to old age.

Photobucket

Welll........I stated.......That is a relief! As I lay on the examining table I was not quite sure what was to come next.
Photobucket

We had to approach the skin graphing procedure. By now I'm cupping my Sock Hands over my mouth in horro! Not to mention I was a candidate for tossing my cookies wright on the doc's shoes!

Photobucket

Next thing I knew, I woke up and I was al repaired! My tail as good as new. Blessed Saturday night!Bubba

Vampire crossing

Photobucket

Cold Saturday morning Possum's. The little plug-in heater working overtime as we go through reading my Vampire books. New moon is really good and I'm glad we have all four of them now. Up above you see the actual fourth book in the series. "Breaking Dawn." the name of this one. Mike and I headed to McKays yesterday and went ahead and bought it. You see Possum's, We absolutely hate getting into the middle of a book series and not being able to just keep reading from book to book to see how the story happens out. As in the Stephanie Plum series, yes it's true we have finished the third book, but have to wait on my Aunt Shelley in New Jersey to send them down to us in Tennessee. Good thing we have the Twilight series to keep us entertained while we wait on the S. Plum books. So I just pour myself another cup of coffee as the sun is up today and promises a beautiful fall day for us. Sounds like a photo opportunity Perhaps if we get out and about and just look around for just a minute. The camera charges just in case this outting does take place at sometime or another during my day and it usually does! I just think to myself....."ROAD TRIP!" Bubba's in the house!!!! Break it down! Don't make me go all break dancin on ya'll now! As the Sock Monkey flies! Have a blessed day Possum's!Bubba

McKays

Photobucket

Mike and I decided to head back to McKays used books today, to go ahead and purchase the fouth book in the Twilight saga. we're 2/3's the way the second book in the series. They are truely sit on the edge of your seat books! Werewolf Jacob has now been informed about Victria Vampiress That she is out to kill Bella! So Victoria Vampiress is on the hunt! Edward is still listening in Bella's mind. and still talks to her as well inside her head. Really instructs her on how to deal with the monsters she's up against.

Photobucket

Have a blessed TGIF Possum's!Bubba

The alnighter

Photobucket

Begging your forgiveness Possum's! ( Yawn and a sterch) I was up all night long reading New moon! And to my surprise the Vampire has gone away in this second book, enter the warewolf! Really Possum's? What are the odds something like that could really happen in this girls life? It certainly has me sitting on the edge of my seat. Sos much so I read the entire night through!

Photobucket

So forgive me if I dose off while blogging here. I will surely not close my eyes as I have to type! I hope you all have a blessed day!Bubba

Reading list update

Photobucket

Mike and I got to the library pretty early this Morning to find the operation hours of today very disheartening. They don't open till 2:00 P.M.! What the Sock Monkey is this kind of jargan? Not sure why, but they usually are open at 9:00 A.M. , so what do you do in the meantime when this happens ya'll ask?

Photobucket

That's what-cha do while ya wait on the library opening! LOL!

Photobucket

Once inside the noble book stacking place...I found myself standing under the reading light of the day. I looked left, I looked left and didn't know where to find the Twilight series books. I walked right up to the desk and ask! The guy was ever so kind to come out and show me to the shelf where they should be housed. Only the fouth book resided there in the spot. The other had been checked out! And why not? They are exciting books to read.

Photobucket

I looked once more to be sure they had not been moved out of place. Nope! Definately not here! Mike and I decided to head down to Kroger in search of the books. They didn't have them either! What's the world coming to? Suddenly the light comes on in both our heads at the same time! We turn and look at each other slowly. To the batmobile Bubba Mike said and away we went! We had remembered Mckay used books store! They had them all and at a fraction of the cost of the original price! We bought the third and fourth books and hurried back to the car. So now back home the reading has begun! Cold whit skin Possum's!Bubba

Reading list

Photobucket

Great Thursday mornin Possum's! Mike and I have been catching up on our reading list. We have been so behind due to the brain thing. *wink* Sssshhhh...we don't talk about it. (Take glasses off and look concerned.) If you don't have glasses, fake it! Anyway We have been hearing about this Twilight thing. Wasn't to excited about another Vampire series,Imean Vampires have been done to death in my opinion. Dracula has been brought back to life so many times. We just think they didn't do it right to start with!LOL! But according to our story,Twilight, all those kinds of Vampire myths are not true anyway. So how could one kill off Dracula in the first place? I'm just saying.....So we finished Twilight the first book in the series yesterday. Well? What do I have to say about this popular story and movie telling of the present day? Mike and I did enjoy the story line, but don't understand how anyone could fall in love with a demonic character such as a Vampire. But it is only a story and we gave it a thumbs up for good content. We will be off to the library today to see if the other two book are availible for checkout. Knowing the library system, there is probably something wrong with the Vampire thing all together. They could keep it in the adult section so we could read it if we wanted to,but I might be talking out of turn to start with anyway.

Photobucket

Next up is the Janet Evanovich/Stephanie Plum series or The Jersey girl series. Now have finished book number three in this series and Mike and I are told there are 14 to mayby 16 books in this series. Really enjoying the comemdic touch in these books although they are more of a serious murder mystery than anything else. But and all around good read. The characters are quite believible if they in fact had been people in real life. The funny part is a Grandma that keeps a big gun in her pocketbook! Laughed on that note.

Photobucket

So where does that leave me on a Thursday morning with out something to read at the moment? Why sitting on the toilet doing yarn crafts ,don't-cha know! As soon as the library opens , I'm headed on there to get more twilight series. Gotta see how it turns out! Ta-ta for now! Have a conpletely blessed Thuraday my Possum's!Bubba

Rainy Tuesday

Photobucket

Good afternoon Bubba's Possum's! Bubba is out at the moment so I decided to Step in and do a blog for him. As you can see,I went to Starbucks this mornin first thing for a Mocha Latte! I did fasten my seatbelt as it is the law here in Nashville. My name is Fletcher Peabody. I do reside in the same house as Your favorite Bubba. He was washed again last night and is out on the viranda drying himself at the moment.

Photobucket

See? I didn't let him know I was photographing him. Digital cameras are amazing! Even if he did notice,he's so use to being photographed, he probably would even notice. I will let him know a little later, that I stepped in for his blog of the afternoon. I gave him the day off.
Photobucket

Lunch ya'll ask? Mike and I stopped off at Kentucky Fried Chicken! Bubba will be pretty upset when he finds out. The last chicken he had was Churches! Her said it was the yuckiest! KFC for him all the way!

Photobucket

Lunch is served, Possum's as Bubba likes to call his Peeps and general Sock Monkey lovers. It's an endearing term used here in the south.

Photobucket

I saw this SM chick out trying to trick or treat a few days early. Nice legs! Baby! Nice try on the TandT deal. I think folks will be wise to ya. Anyhoo, try to stay dry on this a rainy day!Fletcher
